Dahlia, who goes by Daisy to her friends and close community, was introduced to Age Well at Home from a partner organization called Urban Partnership. Urban Partnership is a St. Paul community organization dedicated to providing support and resources to individuals and families. They have a senior group that meets every third Thursday of the month.
Dahlia was very excited to hear that Age Well at Home was providing repairs and modifications to seniors like herself.
A Rent-to-own Success Story
Dahlia and her husband purchased their home in St. Paul in 1975. They started as renters of the home, fell in love with it, and moved into a rent-to-own relationship with the seller. They had two children in the home and enjoyed the size and location.
In 2023, Dahlia’s husband passed away. Loving the home and wanting to call it her forever home, Dahlia was determined to stay put. However, she had some concerns about falling and navigating the house maintenance without her husband.
Making Dahlia’s home safe
Knowing that she needed some plumbing and bathroom repairs and had a fear of falling, Dahlia contacted Age Well at Home in February of 2024. Age Well at Home staff completed the intake process and home assessment in early spring. A month later the work was completed. Age Well at Home installed:
- a new shower valve and handheld-easy to use shower head
- shower chair and grab bars in the bathroom
- new stairs and a railing added to the front side of her house
- additional railings in the back off her deck
Dahlia is now four months post project completion. She reports feeling safer and more comfortable in her home. She loves the front steps and is so satisfied with the program.
When asked about her enjoyment of the program she said is grateful for all the work that was completed and really liked meeting and talking to the staff and contractors of the program.
Since completing the program, Dahlia has referred two friends, Dorothy and Lois, from Urban Partnership to Age Well at Home. Age Well at Home Staff are grateful to have worked with Dahlia and are so pleased she has referred friends at community members.
